Brand Design for Small Businesses

How Do I Help Small Businesses Design Their Brands?

I guide my clients through the process of branding, because many of the entrepreneurs I work with have never tried this before.

And, since I want everyone who I work with to get great results from their branding, I've created a process that I walk everyone through. Having one repeatable process ensures that we'll figure out your business's story, design your brand to tell that story, and that you'll know what's happening every step of the way.

Step 1: Learn a Bit About Branding

Before you get started on branding your business, you probably want to know a bit about what branding is, how the process works, and what to expect.

Tools To Do It: I've written a short report called "Branding Basics for Small Business" that you can get for free when you subscribe to my newsletter. It walks you through the branding process step by step. And, don't worry, it really is short!

I also have an archive of my past newsletter articles on branding availble to browse through.

Step 2: Define Your Brand

In order to design a brand that will tell your story, you first have to be clear about the story you're trying to tell. You can plan that out by identifying the 4 key Brand Definition factors:

  • Who You Are
  • What You Do
  • What Makes You Different From Your Competition
  • Who You Can Best Help

Tools To Do It: I've created the Define Your Difference Branding Workbook that asks all the questions you need to be able to answer in this phase, and helps you put those together into a Brand Definition:

What Makes You Different is the hardest part of your Brand Definition to figure out. So, I wrote a book about how to do that. It's called "Stand Out! Differentiate Your Business to Build a Solid Foundation for Your Brand."

I also offer Brandstorming Consulting to walk you through this process and to coach you through creating your brand.

Step 3: Design Your Basic Brand Kit

Every small business needs at least a couple of Brand Identity pieces designed. For most businesses, that means:

  • A logo that tells your story
  • A business card
  • A digital or printed letterhead
  • An envelope or mailing label
  • A basic website (at least 5 pages)

Sure, you could start out with less than this full package — but without a website, or stationery kit, you won't be able to market effectively and really get the word out about your business. And, developing those without a logo usually means that you'll have to redesign everything when you finally do create your logo. These tools will enable you to get the marketing basics underway.

Tools To Do It: This step is best left to a designer who can take your story and draw it in a way that will show your business strengths to your target audience. I offer a package that will get you the basic kit all in one shot: Entrepreneur's Online Design Kit

And, you probably want to know a bit about the design process. I've put my logo and website design processes, start to finish, up on my site for you to see how it works:

Step 4: Expand Your Brand As Your Business Grows

As your business grows and your business plan gets more complicated, you'll probably need to create more marketing materials to support that growth.

Tools To Do It: Brand Planning Consultations will help you to determine the pieces that you'll need, and the order to design them in to get the most benefit from your designs.

Money-saving printing options and Do It Yourself design options like templates and blogs that can help you grow your business while saving money!

If you're really serious about growing your business, and you need ongoing marketing support, then Brand Management may be for you.
